The old school at Tatham Fells, 1875-1961,
portrayed from its log books
by Bronwen Osborne
The book was put together using material from the school log books kept by the early head teachers. It was a way of providing current pupils and their parents with an insight into the life of the school over the 86 years prior to the move to the new school building.
The Log Books themselves are frail, but by editing and copying the pages the material is available to all. Excerpts are included on many topics, e.g. visiting speakers, seasonal work on the farm, the weather, discipline, sickness, the World Wars & evacuees, inspector’s reports, Empire Day. Some themes recur frequently. The remoteness of the school makes itself felt throughout the Log Books; and in the early days there were constant struggles to get children to school, and to keep the school open.
The new edition has a cover price of £6 (less £1 discount for society members).
