Introduction

From the mid 1800s to the early 1900s, the everyday sight of trains running through the local area would have resembled these recent images of restored, still steaming Victorian trains.

In the earlier years, the Furness Railway Trust train above might actually have been seen, or its stable mates, whereas the train below (on the Bluebell Railway in Sussex) is only generally indicative of later period trains.
